Since the 2019 season, the car has been powered by a newly developed four-cylinder in-line engine with a displacement of two liters, turbocharger and direct gasoline injection.[2] Thanks to supercharging, the BMW P48 achieves an output of around 100 kW higher, with half as many cylinders as the previous engine and half the displacement, to around 456 kW (620 hp).[14] The inlets in the hood were significantly enlarged for intercooling.[2] The engine weighs just 85 kg and works with boost pressures of up to 2.5 bar, which corresponds to 400 liters of air per second. Speeds of up to 9500 rpm are possible.[15] The engine block and cylinder head are made of cast aluminum and are manufactured using the sand casting process. The crankshaft and camshafts are made of steel.[16] The friction-optimized engine does not require fuel-cooled parts and outperforms the 8-cylinder in terms of efficiency by 10 percent, compared to the first turbo engine in the BMW 02, whose boost pressure was up to 1.76 bar, by 50 percent.
