The SP1 is a custom coach-built model manufactured in 2008.
Ferrari originally had a tradition of bespoke—in other words, coachbuilding—cars crafted with the highest level of artistry, customized for royalty and wealthy clients. This marks the first revival of that tradition in 50 years.
The person who placed the order was Mr. Junichiro Hiramatsu, a Ferrari enthusiast from Japan who also served as chairman of Japan's Ferrari Club.
The base model is the F430, and the body was designed by none other than Leonardo Fioravanti, the man behind such legendary cars as the Dino 206/246GT, 365GTB/4 Daytona, 365GT4/BB & 512BB, 308GTB/GTS & 328GTB/GTS, as the chief designer at Pininfarina in years past.
Because this is an official model manufactured by Ferrari…

Because this is an official model manufactured by Ferrari and even covered by their warranty, most of the chassis, engine, suspension, and interior are derived from the F430 and other Ferrari models. On the other hand, the exterior panels are entirely original Fioravanti designs.
Mr. Hiramatsu’s request during the car’s production was that it should have feminine, sexy lines—something most Ferraris lack—and Fioravanti responded with a completely new design.
The name ‘SP1’ doesn’t just stand for ’Speciale”; it stands for “Sport Prototipo,” referring to the racing prototype cars that were active in the 1950s, such as the 268SP and 246SP. The number 1, of course, indicates that this is car number 1, which underscores just how important this car is to Ferrari.
