The CR-X, after pioneering the world of front wheel drive sports cars, underwent a full model change in 1992, under the "Del Sol" sub name.

The conventional CR-X was a poster child for compact front wheel drive sports cars, pursuing the utmost in driving performance. Boasting agile movement, it was also a tad jittery in handling. This mix of good and bad was one of the idiosyncrasies of the CR-X.

Meanwhile, in the early '90s, young people began to distance themselves from sports cars. Noticing this, Honda thought to change the CR-X's positioning. Casting aside the stoic driving image, they sought to transform it into a car that drivers can have fun in.

As a result, the 3rd model took the route of an open-top model, with a roof that can be stowed in the rear. In the top model, Trans-top specification, it boasted a fully automated retractable roof. Although the rear seats were omitted and it became a 2 seater car, overall length was increased more than 7.8 inches over previous models in order to accommodate roof storage.
