Outstanding performance, ultimate driving dynamics, and expressive design—the new Mercedes-AMG compact A 45 4MATIC+ and A 45 S 4MATIC+ sports cars, along with the CLA 45 4MATIC+ and CLA 45 S 4MATIC+, reaffirm their leading positions in their respective segments. They seamlessly continue the success story of their predecessors, while setting numerous new standards. Available in two power and torque variants, the completely newly developed 2.0-liter engine is the world’s most powerful turbocharged four-cylinder engine produced for series production. Even the base model with 285 kW (387 hp) is more powerful than its predecessor. The S variant, with 310 kW (421 hp), competes with vehicles in significantly higher classes. Perfect gear sequences in all driving situations and rapid gearshifts measured in milliseconds are guaranteed by the new AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT-8G dual-clutch transmission with eight gears. The active, fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system distributes power to the rear axle on a wheel-by-wheel basis via AMG TORQUE CONTROL—for maximum traction and the spectacular Drift mode. This is made possible by a new rear-axle differential featuring two multi-disc clutches—one for each rear wheel.

Perfect gear sequences in all driving situations and lightning-fast gearshifts—measured in milliseconds—are guaranteed by the new AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT-8G dual-clutch transmission with eight gears. This is made possible by a new rear-axle differential featuring two multi-disc clutches—one for each rear wheel.
With its new compact sports models, Mercedes-AMG is once again demonstrating its high level of expertise in development: “We have completely redesigned our “45” models—from the engine and transmission through the chassis, the meticulously engineered drivetrain, to the body structure, and of course the design itself—all with one goal: to elevate vehicle dynamics and the sporty driving experience to a level previously unimaginable in the compact class. With the unveiling of this, our most powerful and most dynamic compact sports car, we are also reinforcing the importance of this segment for our growth strategy,” says Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Management Board of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.
The new Mercedes-AMG A 45 4MATIC+ and CLA 45 4MATIC+ models are even more distinctive than their predecessors. The exterior conveys sheer driving pleasure even when the car is stationary. For the first time, the compact class now also features the AMG-specific radiator grille with a wider lower contour and twelve vertical louvres—a clear indicator of its membership in the AMG Performance family. At the same time, the pronounced “shark nose,” the slim, deeply contoured headlamps, and the flat, aerodynamically optimized hood with power domes visually lower the front end to create the impression of extremely dynamic forward thrust.
Its imposing presence is further accentuated by the wider front fenders with flared wheel arches. These provide space for the wider front axle and underscore the car’s athletic appearance. This muscular impression is even more pronounced on the A 45 4MATIC+ than on the CLA 45 4MATIC+, since the base CLA already has a wider front track and the fenders could be flared to a lesser extent.
The front apron is also a distinguishing feature. On the A 45 4MATIC+, it features a jet-wing design. Horizontal fins in the outer air intakes and the elongated lower air intake emphasize the impression of width. The CLA 45 4MATIC+ has an even more expressive appearance with its jet-like external air intakes, highlighting its close family resemblance to the AMG GT 4-door Coupé. The front splitter transitions seamlessly into the side air curtains in front of the front wheels, which optimize airflow to improve aerodynamic performance and the drag coefficient (Cd).
When viewed from the side, the wider AMG side skirts make these compact sports cars appear lower, giving the impression that they hug the road more closely.
The exterior mirrors are mounted on the door panel, echoing the look of Mercedes-AMG coupes and sports cars. This not only gives the car a very sporty look, but also improves its aerodynamics.
As standard, the base models come equipped with 8.5 J x 18-inch light-alloy wheels in a 10-spoke design, aerodynamically optimized and painted in tantalum gray, with 245/40 R 18 tires.
The S-models are equipped with 19-inch light-alloy wheels in a 5-twin-spoke design—with a width of 8.5 inches for the A 45 S 4MATIC+ and 9 inches for the CLA 45 S 4MATIC+. The attractive aluminum rims are aerodynamically optimized and painted in tantalum gray with a high-gloss finish, and fitted with tires in sizes 245/35 R 19 and 255/35 R 19 (CLA 45), respectively. In the base models, the AMG high-performance braking system features gray-painted brake calipers with white AMG lettering. The S-versions are recognizable by their larger, red-painted 6-piston brake calipers with black AMG lettering.
The rear view is characterized by two round twin tailpipes (82 mm in diameter) and the wide rear apron. The S-models are distinguished by their larger, 90 mm exhaust tailpipes with internal fluting and AMG lettering. The impression of width at the rear is further emphasized by the slim, two-piece taillight clusters. The diffuser, featuring two vertical twin fins, contributes to improved aerodynamic performance (CLA 45: four individual fins)—it extends forward at the center of the vehicle, enhancing its effectiveness. The look is rounded out by the spoiler lip in the vehicle’s color on the roof spoiler or on the trunk lid (CLA 45).
The most important optional exterior features:
AMG Aerodynamic Package for optimized aerodynamic balance, featuring a modified front splitter and additional flics on the front apron, an additional diffuser blade, side spoiler lips on the rear apron, and a rear spoiler (A 45) or a larger spoiler lip (CLA 45) in high-gloss black. These features increase downforce and, consequently, handling stability at the limits of the vehicle’s performance.
19-inch light-alloy wheels with a 5-twin-spoke design, aerodynamically optimized, painted either in tantalum gray with a high-gloss finish or in matte black with a high-gloss rim flange
19-inch forged wheels with a cross-spoke design, painted either in titanium gray with a high-gloss finish or in matte black with a high-gloss rim flange, featuring a simulated aluminum center wheel lock
AMG Night Package with design elements in high-gloss black—such as the front splitter or inserts in the side skirts—and black-chrome exhaust tips
The AMG developers extensively reinforced the body shell, as it provides the basis for precise self-steering characteristics, as well as track and camber stability, even when driving at high speeds. A lightweight aluminum plate bolted underneath the engine—the “shearing plate”—increases torsional rigidity at the front end of the vehicle. This is supplemented by a strut tower brace between the front suspension struts and pistol-shaped “shotguns”—additional reinforcing plates that connect the side members to the A-pillars to minimize movement of the front section. Diagonal struts at the front and rear of the underbody further improve rigidity. As a result, the entire suspension system responds with high precision even at the limits of performance, providing the driver with clear feedback—with significantly reduced body torsion around the longitudinal and transverse axes, and less rolling and pitching when cornering, braking, and during load cycles.
