The Subaru Impreza WRX STI Spec C Type RA-R represents the pinnacle of the second-generation WRX STI lineup, created by Subaru Tecnica International (STI) as a lightweight, highly tuned road-going performance car exclusively for the Japanese market. Built in late 2006 with a strict limit of 300 units, it was designed to push the boundaries of handling, power delivery, and chassis dynamics beyond the standard Spec C model.
At its heart sits a 2.0-liter turbocharged EJ20 flat-four engine that produces 320 PS (235 kW / ~316 bhp) at 6400 rpm and 432 Nm (318 lb-ft) of torque at 4400 rpm. This engine drives all four wheels through a close-ratio six-speed manual transmission, paired with Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel drive and a driver-control centre differential (DCCD) for optimized traction and balance.
STI focused heavily on weight reduction and improved dynamics. The RA-R used lighter components, reinforced suspension links, pillowball suspension bushes, stiffer springs and dampers, uprated stabiliser bars, and larger Brembo brake calipers and discs to sharpen its responsiveness and cornering ability. It rode on 18-inch STI-specific aluminium wheels, typically finished in a distinctive colour and wrapped in performance tyres.
The body dimensions are typical of the late-generation GDB Impreza – 4475 mm long, 1740 mm wide, and 1410 mm tall – with a wheelbase of 2540 mm and a reported kerb weight around 1390 kg, making it remarkably agile for a four-door sedan with full AWD.
Cosmetically, the RA-R shared many cues with other STI specials of the era, but paint and trim were highly limited. Most cars were finished in mainstream Subaru colours like Pure White and WR Blue Mica, while a small run of approximately 50 examples was finished in the rare Astral/Sonic Yellow colour – a collectible variation among enthusiasts.
Overall, the Spec C Type RA-R stands as one of the most focused and rare street-legal Impreza STIs ever produced, celebrated for its balance of light weight, strong engine output, sharp chassis tuning, and high build quality.
