In the fall of 2007, the coupe (E92) was the first to be released, while the convertible (E93) and the sedan (E90) followed in the spring of 2008. Certain design elements from its predecessor, such as a raised hood, wider wheel arches, a quad-exhaust system, and air intakes on the fenders, were carried over. The exterior mirrors are similar to those on the M3 from the E36 series.<\/p>\n<p>During development, BMW sought to reduce the vehicle\u2019s weight. The coupe\u2019s standard roof was made of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic, the bumper mounts were made of continuous-fiber-reinforced thermoplastic (known as an organic sheet made of polyamide 6 and glass), and the hood was made of aluminum. The curb weight is 1,655 kg (coup\u00e9), making it nearly 170 kg heavier than its predecessor.<\/p>\n<p>This generation of the BMW M3 is positioned as a rival to the Audi RS4 (for the E90), the Audi RS5 (for the E92), the Mercedes-Benz CLK 63 AMG, and the Mercedes C63 AMG. A six-speed manual transmission comes standard. Starting in May 2008, BMW offered a new seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission developed by GETRAG and called \u00abM-DKG,\u00bb which reduces shift times. This transmission can be operated using shift paddles on the steering wheel and offers an automatic mode.
