Launched in April 1984, it served as VW's direct, high-performance response to the highly successful Ford Escort XR3.Origins and Market ContextWhen Volkswagen initially launched the Gol in 1980, it was a massive gamble that underperformed due to its weak, air-cooled 1.3L and 1.6L boxer engines inherited from the Beetle line.
To completely rewrite the car\u2019s reputation, VW of Brazil developed the GT version.
It introduced liquid cooling to the compact platform and used performance engineering to easily outperform its domestic competition.
Mechanical ArchitectureThe MD 280 Engine: The original 1984 models were equipped with the 1.8-liter MD 280 engine, an evolution of the MD 270 based on Audi design architectures.
It produced 99 horsepower and 14.9 kgfm of torque. It featured a mini-progressive carburetor, a metal air-filter box, and a distinctively long crankshaft stroke.
German Camshaft Tuning: Volkswagen utilized the performance camshaft from the German Golf GTI, giving the domestic engine a sharp, high-revving powerband.The Transmission: The initial 1984 rollout shipped with a four-speed manual gearbox.
Due to competitive pressures and drivability, VW upgraded the setup to a five-speed manual transmission during the 1985 model cycle.Chassis & Exhaust: The GT sat on a stiffened, performance-tuned suspension with a lower ride height. It gained national fame for its factory Kadron dual-outlet exhaust, which generated a deep, aggressive exhaust note.<\/p>\n
