The Audi R8 sports car, whose foundation was based on the "Le Mans Quattro" concept car shown in 2003, was a special supercar not only because it was the company's[1] first exotic, but because it was named after the prototype racecar that successfully won several consecutive championships at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The body incorporated Audi's ASF technology (Audi Space Frame); a space-frame structure made of aluminum. This helped the weight of the body and shell of a car to weigh a mere 210 kg. Audi cut no corners when it came to quality; most of the body was built by hand, and an X-ray inspection device was used to check all welds at the micron level. The center section of the rear spoiler rose at speeds above 62 mph, improving the car's aerodynamics at high speed, while dissipating heat from the exhaust when the car sitting still.
