The fourth-generation M3 was available in three body styles. In the fall of 2007, the coupe (E92) was the first to be released, while the convertible (E93) and the sedan (E90) followed in the spring of 2008. Certain design elements from its predecessor, such as a raised hood, wider wheel arches, a quad-exhaust system, and air intakes on the fenders, were carried over. The exterior mirrors are similar to those on the M3 from the E36 series.

During development, BMW sought to reduce weight.
