Having been successful in 1997, Volkswagen decided to invest, in 1998, in building a car from scratch for Formula 2, using the 4th generation of its Golf model. Unlike the previous model, champion in 1997 (Golf III Kit Car), the Golf IV Kit Car was thought to have been developed in cooperation with VW Motorsport in Hannover.

However, only these records originated in Germany, with the development and preparation of the vehicles carried out in England by Sony VW Racing, such as the Golf III Kit Car.
