The constructor Callaway originally had a deep connection with Chevrolet. Callaway used to supply Chevrolet with a genuine optional twin turbo unit under the B2K option code. The C12 is an original complete car created by Callaway in collaboration with Germany’s IVM Automotive based on the C5 Corvette.
This C12 makes good use of the Corvette’s independent frame feature and has completely new Corvette body panels, giving it a completely new look. The original model was released in 1999, and although it has been a long time since its release, it hardly feels old because the theme was classically modern compared to the C5 Corvette from the beginning. The bodywork is highly accurate, and the interior is equipped with an LCD multi-monitor, which sets it apart from the standard C5 Corvette.
The mechanical components are based on the C5 Corvette and tuned by Callaway, and are equipped with a Supernatural 5.7L LS1 V8 engine that increases maximum output to 440 bhp. Callaway also did its own suspension tuning and adopted 19-inch wheels to accommodate the significantly increased power. The brakes are equipped with Alcon racing spec. Incidentally, the only transmission available is a 6-speed manual.
The Callaway C12 is a high-profile production model, and is an extremely expensive model priced at $178,000. However, its performance is impressive, with 0-60 mph times of 4.7 seconds, 0-60 mph times of 9.8 seconds, and the SS quarter mile of 12.8 seconds. The maximum speed reaches a whopping 192mph (approximately 307km/h), and the maximum lateral G when turning on the skidpad is recorded at 1.04G.
Twenty C12s were produced by 2001, including a regular coupe with a removable Targa top, as well as a hardtop type and a speedster. The interior is also basically based on the C5 Corvette, but because Callaway has custom-made it to the owner’s order, there are small differences depending on the individual produced, such as the seat, shift knob, and custom-colored leather.
The C12 has also been active in races, with Aspen Knolls MCR’s Callaway C12.R taking class pole position in qualifying for the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2001.
