In the spring of 2011, Peugeot introduced a facelifted version of their popular 308 model, which also included an updated GTi variant for the 2012 model year. In the spring of 2011, Peugeot introduced a facelifted version of their popular 308 model, which also included an updated GTi variant for the 2012 model year. While maintaining the core silhouette of the pre-facelift model, the 2012 308 GTi received subtle yet noticeable styling revisions to freshen its appearance and align it with Peugeot’s evolving design language.
The exterior changes included redesigned headlights, which could feature a smoked finish and Xenon functionality, along with a revised front grille and bumper that incorporated smaller air intakes. The rear also saw updates with slightly tweaked taillights. These changes gave the GTi a more contemporary and subtly aggressive stance without drastically altering its overall familiar shape. It typically rode on 18-inch gunmetal-finished five-spoke alloy wheels and featured a roof spoiler and chromed twin-tailpipes, hinting at its sporty character.
Under the bonnet, the 2012 Peugeot 308 GTi was powered by a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder THP (Turbo High Pressure) engine, producing 200 bhp (147 kW) and a maximum torque of 275 Nm (203 lb-ft). This power was delivered to the front wheels through a 6-speed manual transmission. This setup allowed the GTi to achieve a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) acceleration in around 7.7 seconds and reach a top speed of approximately 235 km/h (146 mph).
The chassis of the 308 GTi was tuned to offer a balance between sporty handling and everyday comfort, utilizing a McPherson strut setup at the front and a torsion beam at the rear. While it wasn’t the most hardcore hot hatch in its class, it provided a competent and enjoyable driving experience for daily use.
Inside, the facelifted 308 GTi featured a sporty ambiance with details like aluminum pedals and a flat-bottomed steering wheel. The chrome-ringed dials aimed to enhance the cockpit’s look. Equipment levels were generally good, including features like air conditioning, a CD stereo, power windows and mirrors, and safety features such as multiple airbags and electronic stability control.
While the 2012 Peugeot 308 GTi offered a blend of practicality and performance, some reviews noted that its handling and chassis lacked the outright sharpness of some rivals, and the interior design was starting to feel a bit dated with some components carried over from earlier models. Nevertheless, it remained a capable and stylish warm hatchback option in its segment.
