Introduced in 2000, the 3rd generation M3 is the top performance model of the E46 chassis 3 series, which had undergone a full model change in 1998.
When making this car, the biggest topic on the minds of the small-run production car specialist M division was the power unit. The 3.2L inline-6 produces over 98.6 BHP per litre for a maximum power output of 338.2 BHP/7,900 rpm and maximum torque output of 37.2 kgfm/4,900 rpm, making this engine an iconic symbol of the high-revving engine technology BMW had become famous for. At first this model was only available with a Getrag-built 6-speed manual transmission, but it was later also available with the SMG-II transmission, an improved version of BMW’s 2-pedal manual ‘SMG’ (Sequential Manual Gearbox).
